Downtown Lafayette is a historian’s dream with its beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture, historic neighborhoods and inviting public areas.

This self-guided walking tour takes you through much of the area that was incorporated in Mr. Digby’s original plat of 1825...the Wabash River to 6th Street and North Street to South Street.  William Digby founded the town in 1825 and Lafayette prospered because of development of the Wabash River, Erie Canal and the railroads.

Offered through the Lafayette – West Lafayette Convention & Visitors Bureau, the audio tour will take you step by step, building by building, through our downtown as you learn great trivia about the historic buildings. Enjoy a 45-minute stroll through the downtown or pause the tape so you can discover some buildings on your own or stop for a soda or do some shopping. Rental is free but a $20 refundable deposit is required for the tape/CD and player. We have equipment for individuals or family groups.

Founded in 1869 as Indiana’s land grant institution, Purdue University has grown to be a world-renowned academic and research facility. The campus is a multifaceted center of activity with cultural and athletic events throughout the year. We invite you to tour the campus to learn about the history and traditions as well as the ever-changing landscape and new discoveries. Contact the Purdue Visitor Information Center for a free tour of the main campus, available Monday – Saturday with advance reservations. All Undergraduate level tours are handled through the Office of Admissions.

Did you know the shape of the building is a large 150 foot Greek Cross and from the ground to the top of the statue, the building measures 226 feet?

Grab the self-guided brochure and you’ll learn a lot of interesting facts and trivia about this working county courthouse, built in 1882 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The brochure is available for free at the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Downtown Lafayette


See all that downtown has to offer and learn about the area's rich history. Tour guides will be on board the Wabash Trolley Line to share the tales of Old Tippecanoe in a free 30-minute trolley tour on Saturday mornings. Departing from the northwest corners of 5th & Main Streets on Saturday mornings at 9:40 and 10:40 a.m. from May through August.

A self-guided tour brochure of the route is also available on the trolleys and at the Convention & Visitors Bureau.
