The Long Center started as the Mars Theater in the early 1920s. It was used for vaudeville and had dressing rooms in the basement, a $15,000 organ, and a massive canopy marking the entrance that contained 1,800 electric lights. Movies were added as time passed, and vaudeville acts disappeared. The theater was presented to the city in 1978 and is now utilized for a variety of community events. A $2 million restoration has returned the theater to its former glory and allowed it to enter the 21st century with needed improvements, including handicap accessibility. The lighted marquee still invites the audience to attend musical performances, dramatic presentations and other special events. Another Grand Theater Organ has been obtained and organ concerts are a community favorite.
